Week 3

After a long nice holiday because of snow, we had a three-day-long week in a good mood. In fact it could be a nice idea if workdays were only three days normally. :) Unfortunately, one of the two communication classes was the victim of that holiday so we are behind the schedule now. And we weren't able to start our Internet topic in the course book however we read it ages ago. But we did something more important that we got the feedback of our diagnostic essays. And once again, we terribly realized that we were not good writers at all.

The experience of diagnostic essay showed that lots of words and phrases that we have used up to now were not appropriate. Especially the words that I mostly used in the introduction such as all, every, always, people, humans, life, nowadays and day by day became our banned words. But it was logical not to use them because those words are causing some incorrect generalizations as Mr. O’Regan said. Other important point was the thesis statement that most of us were not able to create in our essays. And that made me realize that before the Comm. 101, I was writing lots of childish essays but I was getting good grades. But in Comm. 101 it’s not easy to do well without working hard. So I will always try to do my best in this course.

Because this was a short week, there is not much to tell. I’m waiting for the next week to see how the classes will be when we introduce in our book. The subject is not deep and difficult so I think it will be really funny.

Week 1 & 2

"Here is my first post and I'm really excited." I won't say something like that because I'm not excited at all. I'm not a person who likes talking to people but I like writing. And I found the chance of being read by someone via this blog stuff. I mean that I was in need of expressing myself by my articles and I would like to thank Mr O'Regan for this creative blog project.

This is my first semester as a freshman and first time (I hope also the last one) of taking the Comm. 101. In the first day of this course, we met Mr O'Regan. At first glance, he was very strict and disciplined but as the time passed I understood that he was really funny. He only wants us "to use our intelligence" and to do what is supposed to be done. If a teacher is strict, he gives lots of tasks without any explanation. So, that's why I can't say Mr O'Regan is strict, he spent a complete lesson to explain thoroughly how we could do our tasks. And also our course has a good topic, “Internet and Relationships", which we are already living it every day. When I consider what I've seen until now, I see that this course will not be too difficult like people tell and consequently it will be very helpful for our academic writing. As an English Language and Comparative Literature student, I don't see myself efficient enough at writing but after this course I hope there will be an important difference.

In my first week, I was a bit nervous about the difficulty of the course but later I gradually had the idea of capability because I realized that nothing is difficult when one tries hard enough. And I started to dream of getting an A at the end of this course. First week’s important event was the diagnostic essay and I did not do well because I was not comfortable enough. And the syllabus quiz was the second week’s funny activity. I said “funny” because we did not get a grade from that quiz and we talked about the “Failure” conditions in a friendly and funny way. After those four lessons I thought that I would love the course and I would be successful at it. Especially blog and podcast tasks are very entertaining and easy to do when compared with a presentation. As I mentioned before I don’t believe that the course would be difficult as it is said. I wish I could have the same feeling in upcoming weeks. :)

Now I don’t have too much to say in this first post but I’m sure the next ones will include more as we live more ./ A few minutes ago, I got the news that the school would also be closed tomorrow. I am really sorry to miss the Comm. 101 but it’s great to have a whole day off. :) This is all from me now. Till the next one I wish you a happy week…
