Week 16

This is a goodbye post. I feel really complicated now; actually I don’t know how to feel. I feel amazingly free after a tough year but I am also a bit sad about leaving my school and friends tomorrow. No matter how demanding the year was, it was that much great with lots of new and great experiences. I feel really lucky and happy for having three years more in here.

This week we had our Comm. 101 final exam and we wrote an essay in three hours as I said before. The topic was not difficult and we could easily use the texts given us before. But I was not able to think quickly in the exam so I spent first hour by thinking about the topic without writing anything. Then I spent rest of the time on trying to write as fast as possible. It was my fault not to use the time effectively but there is nothing to do now. I can only wait for the result.

Overall, studying Comm. 101 with Mr. O’Regan was a good experience and my classmates were all nice people. I will also take Comm. 102 from Mr. O’Regan in summer school so I hope it will be another good experience for me. I will miss Comm. 101 Section 8.

Goodbye…

Week 15

This was the best week of the year because we had the last lectures of the year. Now we are studying for our final exams. First of the final exams will be Comm. 101 and we will write an essay in 3 hours. I think it will be a bit demanding to write in 3 hours with no break but we can handle.

On Tuesday, we got the feedback of our second essay’s final draft and when I got mine I was very pleased because I got 91. My first grade was also 91 and now I want to pass Comm. 101 with an A. In the first week of the course I also wrote in my blog that I had been dreaming about getting an A at the end of the course and now I feel really close. But I know that everything is still in Mr. O’Regan’s hands because we still have 41 points not given yet including the final exam.

On Thursday, we talked about the final exam: what we have to do before and during the exam. Because it was not allowed, we didn’t talk about the texts. But later there was a study session for the exam so we had the chance of discussing the texts with the teachers and asking our questions.

At the weekend, I read the texts again and now I feel ready for the exam. I will try to do my best. That’s all for now. Bye…

Week 14

Time has passed quickly and we are coming to the end. Comm. 101 has been one of the most demanding classes of this semester with its tasks. But following the instructions and using our intelligence have always helped us in Comm. 101.

On Tuesday, we talked about paragraph organization types and Mr. O’Regan gave a task about it: writing an essay. But it will be easier than the ones we did before because it will be a TWE type essay. It is due next Tuesday.

On Thursday, we handed in our second essay’s final draft and we got relaxed. So the class was very funny that day. Then we talked about quotation and we realized how complicated it is. We learned that we should be very careful while using a quote.

Everything went well in Comm. 101 until now and I hope the rest will also be nice. Now I have to go and do my Comm. homework as soon as possible because I have to prepare two presentations for my Hist. 245 and Turk. 100 classes this weekend. I am in a hurry because there will be limited time to study this weekend due to spring festival of our school.

That’s all for now. Bye.

Week 13

This week we had only one class on Tuesday because Thursday was holiday due to the 1st May chaos of Istanbul. But missing the Comm. 101 class was not a good thing because we would have been more informed about our second draft if we had had that class. However, it was a good chance to get relaxed.

On Tuesday, we discussed the common mistakes which we had done in our first drafts. Mr. O’Regan was a bit angry because he encountered the same mistakes again which he had seen in our first drafts before. He also gave us the homework grades which equal 5 % of the course by checking our notebooks’ being ready when the lesson started.

Now I am working on my essay again to make necessary changes for the second draft because on Tuesday I have a tutorial with Mr. O’Regan.

When I think about the Comm. 101 class, there has been a long time since it started and I have used the Internet much more than before I started taking this class. Although it is nice to use the Internet to do the tasks, it can easily make one distracted and make one spend many hours on it unnecessarily. So since I started to use it, I have always cared about only doing my tasks then shutting my computer down.

That is all for this week, see you later…

Week 12

Thursday was the deadline of our second essay’s first draft so we spent Tuesday by talking about the essay. As it was the class just before the deadline, it was very important for all of us. I also had a tutorial with Mr. O’Regan on Wednesday to discuss my draft and make the last changes on it. Wednesday was a sunny and great holiday but I worked on my essay instead of enjoying the nice day outside. But it is not a big deal because there is an upcoming holiday less than a month later.

On Thursday we handed in our essays and got relaxed for a week. I said “for a week” because we will be working on our second draft next week. In our second class, our topic was “topic sentences”. We did some exercises and tried to understand how a topic sentence is constructed. Mr. O’Regan also gave us some exercises about it as homework due next Tuesday. We will also hand in our podcast evaluations on Tuesday and it was a very interesting task to evaluate our own podcasts. We read our classmates’ feedbacks on our podcasts and evaluated our own work.

As I said, there is less than a month till the end of the semester but it will be demanding enough with mid-terms and finals. I am really worried about the Comm. 101 final because we will have to write a complete essay, which is like we write in two weeks, during the exam. I hope it will be a good final whistle.

Week 11

This week we handed in our podcast evaluations and now we are waiting to see our feedback. When we get our feedback, we will evaluate our own podcasts. Podcasts were not very notable for this week because we all mainly thought about our second essay. We talked about Mileham’s text which is about online infidelity and Brendan & Lauren’s story. Mr. O’Regan explained clearly and comprehensively how we would write our synthesis essay. Then he offered an extra week for us to work on our essay but we rejected. Generally students want extra time to do a task but this situation is not one of those because most of us want to do it as soon as possible to have enough time later for our midterms. Furthermore, we wouldn’t have a second feedback which would be beneficial later if we agreed for extra time. So it was a good decision.

Today I had a tutorial to discuss my outline with Mr. O’Regan before I started to write and again it was very beneficial for me to shape my essay. Now I am writing my essay and on Wednesday I have another tutorial to make the last changes on it.

By the way, last week I registered in Mr. O’Regan’s Comm. 102 class in summer school. As Mr. O’Regan said it will be very demanding with my Economy class so I need to study hard in that five-week-period. But the topic sounds very interesting and enjoyable: “Stories and Philosophies”. I think the most difficult part of it will be the research paper as I heard from my friends.

This is all for now. See you later…

Week 10

Week 10 of Comm. 101 was not done thanks to the holy spring break which let us take a breath among those difficult exams and essays. It was a great holiday to refresh but it has passed very quickly. We could find enough time to do our Comm. homework and we did it easily in the comfortable atmosphere of our homes. We read the article for upcoming essay and we assessed the podcasts. Now we are ready for new tasks.

Week 9

What a nice day! I am at home now and I am having great time thanks to spring break. I am also very happy because Fenerbahçe has been playing really well recently and last Wednesday they beat Chelsea as I guessed before. I also believe that tomorrow night Fenerbahçe will have a good result again in London to go to the semi-final.

When it comes to Comm. 101, week 9 was one of the usual weeks. On Tuesday we handed in our second drafts of essay 1 and now we are waiting for the results. We talked about the famous “academic sin”, plagiarism. Mr. O’Regan explained us how to avoid from plagiarism and showed some examples of plagiarism. It was a funny lesson because we were relaxed after handing in our drafts.

On Thursday our topic was relationships and betrayals. We discussed comprehensively about betrayals and at the end Mr. O’Regan delivered an article, which is about 30 pages, to be read in the spring break. By the way, there is also another task to do in the spring break: grading podcasts of the class members. But there is a lot of time to do them so it is not a big deal.

There is not much to say. Bye for now… Have a nice holiday...

Week 8

This week, Monday was a very nice day for me because when I went to Mr. O’Regan’s office for my tutorial at 9:00 am, I saw that there was no cross on my feedback. So I wouldn’t need to make a huge change on my essay. Tuesday and Thursday were spent for our essays again. Mr. O’Regan talked about our mistakes and how to correct them. We also talked about our podcasts and our homework for spring break is to assess each other’s podcasts. Every single one will listen to every essay of the class and write feedbacks. We have to be very careful about it because wrong decisions for feedbacks will also affect our own grades.

On Tuesday, I was just like a corpse in Comm. class because I hadn’t slept approximately for 44 hours to revise for my Hist. 245 mid-term. It was a bad planned study again but fortunately the exam was easy for me and I did a good job. But after my classes were over I slept all the day. Next week won’t be that tough and I am looking forward to going home for the spring break.

A few hours ago, my favorite football team, FENERBAHÇE, beat Beşiktaş and I feel really good now. But Beşiktaş was easy to beat for Fenerbahçe. Next Wednesday, they will play against Chelsea in Champions League and I know they will bury Chelsea into six feet under the hell of Kadıköy. As you can also see, next week will be the Fenerbahçe week for me.

Week 7

What a week! I really understood that I was a student. I worked hard enough this week and I am comfortable and happy now. For Comm. 101, the most important date up to now was this Tuesday because it was the deadline of the draft 1 of our first essay. And it was a nervous day for most of us even though we completed our drafts because no one was completely sure that their draft would be accepted by Mr. O’Regan. But I was relaxed when Mr. O’Regan accepted my draft. On Tuesday we also talked all about vocabulary and our homework was to check the first and the second 1000 most common words in English.

Thursday 5:00 pm was the deadline for our podcasts so I prepared and placed it on the F-Drive on Wednesday. On Thursday Mr. O’Regan warned us about the tutorials for 45 minutes. And we learned that we should be very careful about punctuality not to have some absences. After the Comm., I had a psychology class and I could only go to Mr. O’Regan’s office to book a tutorial at about 1:30 pm. And it was only enough to book the earliest tutorial of the week: Monday 9:00 am. I won’t have the opportunity to check my draft beforehand so I guess the tutorial will not be efficient enough for me. But it was my mistake not to go there earlier so I will bear the consequences. But I will have a whole week and I think I will be able to do a good job.

This week was a difficult one but it also gave me the ambition to work hard. And from now on I will study regularly. For the next Tuesday we will read another article from our course book and I will do it on Saturday because I will revise for the Hist. 245 midterm later. That’s all for now, see you...

Week 6

This week in both classes, we talked about first draft of our first essay. Mr. O'Regan comprehensively told us everything about how we would write our essays. And he warned us about what we shouldn't do in our essays like using "mention" in a wrong meaning. He also tried to remind us not to leave our essays to the last minute. But it seems impossible for a student to do something in advance so we generally have difficulties in completing our tasks.

On Friday I was planning to start my writing process on saturday and finish it until the saturday night. But just like my other task plans of my 13-year-long school life, it didn't work again. I was able to finish it on sunday night because for two days I was constantly distracted by any silly thing happened around me. And on monday I went to Mr. O'Regan to check my essay before the deadline so I would be able to change something wrong with it. I realized that I constructed a building but far from Mr. O'Regan wanted me to do. So I had to change my essay completely.

Now it is 3:30 am of tuesday and I just printed my essay and came back to write this post. I am realizing now that my conventional understanding of "studying" is just starting to make me sick. For upcoming days, I have to prepare my podcast until thursday, read a novel which I haven't started yet and write an essay about it for Turk. 100 until friday. By the way, I have to revise for my history quiz and computer midterm that I am going to take 6 hours later. So I have to go now, bye...

Week 5

On Tuesday, Mr. O'Regan checked our books to see whether we read the "Internet Paradox" or not. But I was really comfortable because I had read it well and annotated. After the control, he talked about our essay instructions. He emphasized that we should print out the instructions from his web page. There is a limited time till the deadline so I will print it just after writing this post and start to think deeply about my essay. In addition, we did another group discussion on tuesday again. It was really funny and useful.

Thursday was not a bright day for me because of the "Under Odeon" party the night before. All day I had a terrible headache and needed a good sleep. I had three classes that day and Comm. was the second one. I didn't feel up to speaking even a single word but the lesson was not very demanding fortunately. We investigated the Internet Paradox with our partners. I have to admit that I was not very useful but I tried my best under that condition.

This weekend I didn't go out and drink so I feel really healthy. I decided to pause for a while. :) Friday night I cooked a nice meal with my roommate and later we watched two great films. One of the films was "Seven" (Morgan Freeman,Brad Pitt) and I highly recommend it. And now I'm going to concentrate on my essay and podcast. After I finish all that stuff, I will be very satisfied. I have to study, bye...

Week 4

This was an interesting week that I realized my deficiency in effective reading. Mr. O’Regan gave a quiz on The Seductive Space reading which was our homework from the first week. And I could only get 50 out of 100 even though I read it well by annotating. It was also an open-book-quiz so it makes the situation more ironic. I learned that I had to read more carefully than I did before. I will be more concentrated on the next reading, Internet Paradox, because we will write our first essay about it. The deadline of the first draft was really distant when we started but as the time passed it got closer and I’m really getting worried about it. :)

When I think about the second lesson of the week, I remember the shameful condition in which I found myself as the “secretary” of our three-person-group. :) I was the secretary because of Mr. O’Regan’s rule that required males’ being secretaries. We investigated The Seductive Space again and answered the related questions that Mr. O’Regan delivered. Another important rule was about the language of discussions which made us speak no Turkish among us. It was really funny and useful to discuss in English as Turkish students because we rarely speak English among us in our daily life. The group activity was also very nice to increase communication among class members.

The fourth week is over but it was just like yesterday when Mr. O’Regan first entered the classroom. I wish I could hold the time and do all the tasks required for every class and then paint the town red. But it’s impossible so I have to sit down in the darkness of my room and work hard to prepare my podcast, do my reading and think about the first draft. At least it could be really relaxing if we were allowed to drink in our dorms. While I am studying in the evenings, a few beers could be my best friend to make me relaxed. Right now, I’m really in need of a good friend so I have to go out. :) See you…

Week 3

After a long nice holiday because of snow, we had a three-day-long week in a good mood. In fact it could be a nice idea if workdays were only three days normally. :) Unfortunately, one of the two communication classes was the victim of that holiday so we are behind the schedule now. And we weren't able to start our Internet topic in the course book however we read it ages ago. But we did something more important that we got the feedback of our diagnostic essays. And once again, we terribly realized that we were not good writers at all.

The experience of diagnostic essay showed that lots of words and phrases that we have used up to now were not appropriate. Especially the words that I mostly used in the introduction such as all, every, always, people, humans, life, nowadays and day by day became our banned words. But it was logical not to use them because those words are causing some incorrect generalizations as Mr. O’Regan said. Other important point was the thesis statement that most of us were not able to create in our essays. And that made me realize that before the Comm. 101, I was writing lots of childish essays but I was getting good grades. But in Comm. 101 it’s not easy to do well without working hard. So I will always try to do my best in this course.

Because this was a short week, there is not much to tell. I’m waiting for the next week to see how the classes will be when we introduce in our book. The subject is not deep and difficult so I think it will be really funny.

Week 1 & 2

"Here is my first post and I'm really excited." I won't say something like that because I'm not excited at all. I'm not a person who likes talking to people but I like writing. And I found the chance of being read by someone via this blog stuff. I mean that I was in need of expressing myself by my articles and I would like to thank Mr O'Regan for this creative blog project.

This is my first semester as a freshman and first time (I hope also the last one) of taking the Comm. 101. In the first day of this course, we met Mr O'Regan. At first glance, he was very strict and disciplined but as the time passed I understood that he was really funny. He only wants us "to use our intelligence" and to do what is supposed to be done. If a teacher is strict, he gives lots of tasks without any explanation. So, that's why I can't say Mr O'Regan is strict, he spent a complete lesson to explain thoroughly how we could do our tasks. And also our course has a good topic, “Internet and Relationships", which we are already living it every day. When I consider what I've seen until now, I see that this course will not be too difficult like people tell and consequently it will be very helpful for our academic writing. As an English Language and Comparative Literature student, I don't see myself efficient enough at writing but after this course I hope there will be an important difference.

In my first week, I was a bit nervous about the difficulty of the course but later I gradually had the idea of capability because I realized that nothing is difficult when one tries hard enough. And I started to dream of getting an A at the end of this course. First week’s important event was the diagnostic essay and I did not do well because I was not comfortable enough. And the syllabus quiz was the second week’s funny activity. I said “funny” because we did not get a grade from that quiz and we talked about the “Failure” conditions in a friendly and funny way. After those four lessons I thought that I would love the course and I would be successful at it. Especially blog and podcast tasks are very entertaining and easy to do when compared with a presentation. As I mentioned before I don’t believe that the course would be difficult as it is said. I wish I could have the same feeling in upcoming weeks. :)

Now I don’t have too much to say in this first post but I’m sure the next ones will include more as we live more ./ A few minutes ago, I got the news that the school would also be closed tomorrow. I am really sorry to miss the Comm. 101 but it’s great to have a whole day off. :) This is all from me now. Till the next one I wish you a happy week…
